This RELAY KIT was created to prevent riders from becoming stranded from keyswitch failures caused by the popular (but inadequate) EMGO keyswitches for the Honda Fours, which are actually switches from the CB175/350 Twins, but fitted with Honda Four-style plugs.
Tech Notes:
The unfortunate problem (circa 2008): the EMGO switches that are presently marketed for these bikes contain 8 amp contacts inside, which get hot in operation on the vintage Honda Fours, particularly on the CB750K0-K4 and CB550 models that have the keyswitch mounted on the frame (i.e., not in the instrument cluster). The original contacts in the OEM switches were rated for 16 amps and included large (Red and Black) supply wires, which the inexpensive EMGO switches lack. The resulting failure mode of the EMGO switch is usually a Red or Black wire melted off the back of the switch.
This RELAY KIT removes the heavy load from the keyswitch, letting a relay do the hard work: this allows use of the otherwise mechanically sound EMGO switch to be reliably used on the Honda SOHC Fours.
The cost of this Relay Kit plus an EMGO switch is still less than the genuine Honda keyswitch, if you can even find one...
